Game Scale

Postby MagnusVerde » Mon Sep 22, 2003 4:03 am

Like ideas for clone. Think game scale should be kept in mind. Looking at Terra each hex ~300 miles across/Hexside:150mi. Probably easiest for player build is unit constuct like present system. Since units are monotype largest unit at best represent Regiment. EFS Universe distintly fuedal,so small (for pop) armies most likely.

Time Scale: Non motorized troops from Egyptians to WWI averaged 16 Mi/day marching into areas without prepositioned supplies with a few elite armies marching 20/mi day for a month or so. A foot unit would march ~1.5 hexes/month. Motorized units average 30-40 m/day march or 3 hexes/month. Numbers appear constant form WWII to Iraq war So probably constant to EFS. So reasonable time scale 2 or 3 months per turn.

Note that in this time scale an army marching totally in friendly terrain with supply dumps preposition could cover 2 times the distance. With transport like rail maybe 3 times

I belive the scale has already been discussed a few times, quite early on in fact - try a search for scale and take a look at some of the results it returns.

Always good to have additional input though!

Supply has been talked about briefly as well, and isn't likely to play a part.

Regardless of whether supply is handled or not, it's an idea to model the different speed of moving in safe versus hostile territory. 20 miles a day is quite a lot in enemy territory.

It's hard to say what's the prudent level of detail. Certainly that's a feature not present in the original EFS but it's there in several other strategy games. Also the size of the "hex" matters especially in deciding how much work the playing becomes.

Another complication is that some types of units, such as hovercraft, move much faster.
